My Breast Cancer Struggle
Written by: MaryJack

I'm 59 years old and I have been battling breast cancer for 7 years now. I'm alive today because of a drug called Avastin.

My story begins in 2001, when I noticed that my arm and had a web of popping red veins. Soon doctors identified a tumor, and I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I did Chemotherapy, but the tumor started growing again, so I was forced to have a mastectomy.

In 2004 I was diagnosed with liver cancer. This meant that my cancer had metastasized. It was treatable but no longer curable.

I underwent surgery; a liver resection. I was then put on drugs called Etoposide and Navelbine and my cancer went into remission. Four years later, the cancer returned! I now had four tumors in my liver and my outlook wasn't very good.

Luckily, a clinical trial had recently been in progress and I was chosen for a combination of Xeloda and Avastin. Xeloda is a chemotherapy drug that kills cancerous cells. Avastin cuts off blood-flow to cancerous tumors. Almost immediately two of my cancerous tumors disappeared. The combination of cancer drugs seemed to be working.

Today, I'm living life and enjoying it again! While I get tired more easily than I used to, I can take part in just about all normal activities. I can go out to dinner with my husband and stay in touch with my friends.
