I have had pancreatitis as far back as I can remember, knowing now what it is. I remember the first attack at 5 years of age and the worst of my life at 10. No one knew what it was. On both occasions, I had eaten pork roast. As an adult these kept recurring and I have had several instances where I became septic. I, too, am one of those whose intake of greasy diet will cause this. I was once diagnosed by several medical specialists at 3 different teaching universities as having cancer of the pancreas, but the mass is still there after 20 years and I am still living and they cannot explain what it is and they want to remove it, but I have had 4 surgeries, trying to circumvent pancreatitis and I am not anxious for another. I have had to learn to eat fat-free foods. It's not much fun when everyone else is having deviled eggs at a party with pork ribs on the grill, or a big juicy steak searing but I have learned to be happy with tuna packed in water, mashed potatoes with water and skim milk. No mayo. Perish the thought. Anything containing fat or pork is enough to make me cry thinking of the pain it brings to my life. I have taken up to 100 pancreatic enzymes per day to stop the greasy stools. I had gallstones at a very young age, had my GB removed in my early 20s after many years of being told "it's all in your head..take an aspirin and call me in the morning..or better yet, a Valium.." My GB ruptured before it was removed. I was loaded with stones. Still the doctors think mine is pancreas divisum.

Thanks gheidrick! I live in the DFW area, so I'm not sure you can get me a referral here, but one would be great! I went to a GI , but he wants to give me an endoscopy to rule out the stomach. It just didn't feel right when he sent me to his endoscopic clinic owned by him and a couple of other doctors. I cancelled the appointment and I'm going to get a second opinion before I put out the $$ for the procedure. I'm also going to start a food/symptom log so I get a better idea of what causes the pain. Thanks for the support!

You can expect occassional attacks. Stay away from anything fried, (I'm told dairy too : (. I still drink occassionally (shouldn't) but I find food hurts me more than anything. What to expect? Find a great GI doctor. Don;t know where you live. It's a life changing process and different for everyone. Had it for 3 years and 4 ECRP's. There is surgery that can help. I live in Houston so I have the medical center. But if you need a referral to a good Dr. for this, let me know where you live and I'll ask him. Have to go for a check up next week! Wish you the best, keep us posted. My brother died from this, I have it and my dad was diabetic, but me...got labeled as an alcholoic so yeah! I can't eat anything spicy, onions, peppers, meat (except chicken) and very little seasoning. Expect a pretty bland diet. Take care.

He is so right. It's your body and unfortunately, somethings have to be figured out personally. It's not the same for everyone. And he has created a great sight where you can at least read what has happened to everyone else and see if any of it might work for you. Check back and let us know how you are doing or any questions.

I am a 31,and I have had chronic idiopathic pancreatitis for more than half of my life and I know what all of y'all are going through. I was the youngest person to ever have it. But here is some advice food is not always bad . But I have learned about this new med.called Creon it is working for me and out of all the things I have been through with my pancreas this is the only thing that has worked. It helps digest food better. I was going in to the er and being admitted into the hospital at least 2 to 4 times a year and having even more attacks at home each year. So talk to your doctor if you would like to try to that med. But the food thing is very true even if the doctor says it is not true. :-)

Man I can sympathize, emapthize actually because I was diagnosed with both acute and chronic pancreatitis in 1979 and given 10 years. I was lucky. I did research and found a way to survive and overcome the pain and symptoms. And diet is extremely important. For my complete story and exactly what I do visit overcoming pancreatitis

The cysts I have are in the pancreas. I just got the initial results from the biopsy yesterday and they are not cancer. They are both quite large. One cyst is 2 1/2 inches square and the other is over 3 inches square. No doctor has yet mentioned removing them. They were mostly concerned that they were cancerous, which I am happy to say they are not. From what I can gather from the report I received from the doctor who did the endoscope ultrasound, it appears i had another attack of pancreatitis but did not know it. The funny thing is, I cannot remember any pain with my first bout although my wife says I was screaming in pain for hours. I am taking a wait and see course with this. As long as I can function, I will deal with whatever happens to me.

Yes. I get them more from stress than anything. I have a high stress life because I'm a very high stress person and very hyper. Different types of food will get me fast too (for me NO onions, peppers of any sort, chocolate and dairy) . I have flare ups about every 3 months. Levels only around 573 but the pain is horrible and I start to vomit I usually go to the around the corner ER, get some pain medication (intravenous) and most important for me Saline. Then I can manage at home. also find (that being a woman) when I'm getting ready to start my period (even though I had a Novasure procedure to stop them I am the 99% that it didn't completely work on) that it will bring on an attack (hormones?) If I drive 3 hours in my truck...ER at some in the trip. All my doctors tell me is "undocumented". So no scientific proof, but I have the proof! They have no interest into looking into. They need to read these forums and I've told them that.

Are they cysts by your duct or on the outside? Makes a difference. I have cysts on the outside that they tested for cancer, but if you have a cyst where you duct drains, much more important. Like a pyscedo (sp?) cyst. I can't take the enzymes they give me make me sick to my stomach. Like drinking a gallon of acid. Love to send them to someone, not opened and I know they are $1300 without insurance. Keep us posted. I've had Chronic Pancreatisis for 3 years. My biggest problem that causes attacks is food. They can't tell me anything about what to eat execpt no dairy and the ususal "trial and error" and we all know what trial and error causes...an attack! It also seems as though every time I get another ECRP to insert a stint, it causes another food group to disappear that I can no longer eat.
